Actor and costume Research

Joe Alman- 17 years old

The actor we will be using is Joe Alman, from our planning of the music video; Joe fits the description of the character we would like to portray in the video. Joe also has acting experience from his previous school and we believe could play the part in the video very well, to make the character act real and also capture the feelings we are trying to portray within the music video.

We would like the character to wear a dark coloured hoodie much like the one seen in the photograph. The hood should be up and partly covering his face to show the characters loneliness and self consciousness. By having a dark coloured jacket, it sticks to the dark themes of the video and will also come in handy when trying to capture only the characters face in shots that are more dark.

The character in the video will also be wearing dark skinny jeans as this shows originality etc. Again also sticking to the theme of darkness.

The character will where trainers that are used for skateboarding, this gives an idea to the personality of the character and what he enjoys doing. Again the shoes will be dark sticking to the theme.

Location research and Planning

The outside and inside of this building will be used several times throughout our video, it will be used as a place of retreat for the character in the video. The run down and broken building will symbolise the way in which the boy is feeling and that he feels lonely and not looked after much like the building featured in the photograph. The dark interior of the building will be used as a place to sit and ponder by the boy, in order to get a good shot and for the image to look effective we will have to use artificial lighting as well as sun light to ensure the shots come out well.

The holes due to missing bricks in the building will be carefully used to capture rays of light shining through them. A dolly cam will be used so that the camera travels smoothly along the floor and shows different lights coming through holes in the wall. One of the more advanced shots will be creating a ray of light shining down from the roof on to the character, created either by natural or artificial light to create a feeling to the audience of inspiration and a change in the characters feelings.

Music Video Analysis. Jack Penate-Second minute or hour

1) I am going to analysing Jack Penate’s debut song second minute or hour, the song was released in 2006 and reached 17 in the charts and was recognised for its music video. Jack re-released the song in 2007 at the times of his first albums released to promote his name.

2) The music video is simple but effective as you see Jack sprinting down a marina dressed smartly and singing as he runs, he continuously speeds up link to the lyrics “I can’t wait for another second minute or hour”. The clever link is that the lyrics are about a girl and as he seems in a rush the audience then think he is running to get her back or to see her etc

Mid shot -

3) The costume is a pink jacket, turquoise shirt, black skinny fit jeans and bright red shoes this is putting him in the indie genre and also he seems to be quite an original individual, this shows the audience that the music and artist is something new and a fresh sound. People like new sounds and by the video being so original but simple, and the costume and song choice chosen, this will attract the audience to want to hear more of the artist, this proved successful as Jacks debut album matinee reached number one in the UK album charts with the song ‘second minute or hour’ featuring on it.

Side shot -

4) Although the video is simple it allows for many types of shots, the video appears to be done all in one take but this still allows for a range of inventive shots. The main shot used in the video is a mid shot of Jack. This allows the audience to see his face as he sings the surroundings and the distance he has travelled. There is also shot from the side that are filmed through things like bus shelters and fences etc, this gives the audience the feeling that someone is running with him. The camera stays mainly at the same level through out the video until the end where Jack is filmed on the floor out of breath.

Kneeling Down-

5)This video is a good inspiration to our music video idea as; many of our shots are of our character walking through various places. The use of the dolly camera in this video has inspired us to use one for the making of our video so that we ensure we get smooth and accurate footage that looks good but also gives the feeling of someone following the character.

Treatment

Treatment

• Theme – A guy character losing his rights to live and his head is messed up and he is falling out with friends and girlfriend.

• Costume – The main character will wear Dark skinny/slim fit jeans, a T-shirt with a Dark hoody jacket.

Storyline
• A high angle shot of the person featured in the video, the camera with then pan upwards up his body to show his face and the location where he is. The surrounding is to be dark, dull and run down giving a gloomy feel to the beginning of the video.

• The next shot will be from behind the actor showing what he can see giving the audience a better understanding of the run down location in which he is stood.

• Next a shot of the persons iPod and a finger clicking the play button, as he does this the beat of the music will begin to drop and then the camera will zoom right in and a flicker effect will take it to the next shot.

• The character will walk down a rundown alley way and past a graffiti wall, the floor and walls will be dirty, and the art on the walls will have relevance to the song lyrics and the theme of the video.

• The camera will then cut to a low angle shot of the characters back as he walks down a road. The camera will be slightly above the character to portray that someone is watching him and to make the character appear small and inadequate.
• To continue the feel of inadequacy and loneliness, a shot from very high up with the effect of a security camera will be next, this links to the characters paranoia and troubled head.

• Another shot from a different high point will pan left and appear to show the character pulling something out of his pocket.

• Just before entering a rundown building he flicks a cigarette and enters then disappears into the darkness.

• The next shot is of him sat lonely in a dark room with rays of light shining through caps in the old wall that he is facing. A ray of light with then highlights him sat there and he exits the building.

• As he walks past the abandon building the camera flashes to what appears to be a rave and he is walking in an identical way through the middle.
• As he walks down a busy road he bumps into a few of his friends and they begin to argue, they all then exit the camera shot and leave the character obviously upset to the audience.

• A shot shown through the wind screen of a car drives passed and sees the upset character standing lonely and very still.

• The camera then cuts back to the character approaching a house and entering to find his girlfriend lying on a bed and very upset, the camera will be a point of view shot and will turn back round and leave slowly. This insinuates that the character runs away from his troubles and doesn’t approach problems.

• The next shot is of the character leaving the house in a rush that turns into a sprint, another security camera will pick him up from a high shot again making him look inadequate.

• The character comes to a stop and heavy breathes and appears to be upset, a dolly cam follows him slightly down the road and pass his old friends that are staring evilly at him, the character holds his head down and doesn’t make eye contact so he doesn’t appear to care, but it is obvious to the audience he is upset.

• The character the walks up towards a bright sun and stands on the top of a hill facing the sun.

• There is a shot of him facing the sun, and he will appear to be a silhouette in the sun.

• The final show is a pan from the characters face and then gradually sinks down to the ground and the camera goes black.

Music website analysis

Lostprophets website home page

The website contains different things to do with the band, there is links to social networks that they are on other than their own website, they advertise to their fans to follow them on twitter, MySpace and Facebook. Right at the top they have an advertisement for their new album ‘The betrayed’ and also give a list of the different websites and shops in which fans can purchase there newest album. On the tool bar there is a link to the latest news about the band which gives personal information about the different group members and their roles in the band Etc. The second link on the tool bar shows the bands upcoming shows and also gives locations and times for their shows, it also shows dates for tours around the world where venues have not yet been decided but tells the audience they plan to play in areas soon. There is a link to the bands merchandise that has all the bands albums and singles for sale. Other merchandise such as t-shirts, posters and various other things are available to purchase via the website. There is also a link on the tool bar called ‘media’ that has different video, pictures and songs for their fans to view and listen to promoting the band and giving fans an inside look to what the band are like and there type of shows.

The band let the audience know that they have been nominated for a kerrang award and give links to website viewers to vote for them to win the award. They list the awards they are nominated for and give separate links so that fans can vote for them on each award. This is a clever way to get the fans to believe they are involved with the bands success.

The band have posted there newest video on their homepage to keep the fans updated on their location and to release new tour dates, and to also let fans no what to expect. The video features them talking about the new album and upcoming singles. The video has interviews with the band in Australia and footage and pictures of the bands gigs and social life. This allows fans a look in at what the band are like and the types of stuff they get up too.

The band have on their homepage the newest merchandise and the bundles in which you can by them, the bundles have CD’s with t-shirts and different combinations. The website is selling the newest album with the two old albums cheaper to try and encourage fans to buy all of their music.

Other merchandise are hoodies and also skateboards to encourage their target audience of skaters to wear their brand to boost their profile.

The font that is used in the logo is electric blue and black, the colours go well together and the black sticks to the bands rock and gothic genre of music that they play. The band appear to be at the top of the logo and in a cloud of some sort portraying them as god like figures, again they are on top of something depicting their dominance in the music business. The colour blue and black are then repeated throughout the rest of the website, with the gothic black being in the background and the blue being used for the writing.

CD cover analysis

The idea of this album cover portrays Lil Wayne’s originality and attempt to do something different. The message on his eyelids that say “fear” “god” gives the audience an idea of the type of music that the album will contain the writing shows that the audience will hear about fear within his music and Lil Wayne’s Christianity will mean there is a message about god within the album. He is wearing make up to give the cover a bit of colour and highlights different features. The shadows used show the dark theme of the albums content. The choice to use his face creates depicts the pain that has gone in to the album, the tattoos that are on his face tell the audience a bit about Lil Wayne’s personality. The tear drop tattoos are to imply loss or murder by the person, this is showing that the genre will be gangster rap and will have stories of crime and pain within it.

The use of really bright colours featured on this album cover give the audience of the bright and up beat genre of music. This album falls under pop or indie rock and features songs about school and teenage years explaining the toys on the shelf shown on the album cover. The toys are from the 80’s telling the audience that the songs featured are about the bands experiences growing up and there lessons in life. The title of the album “a guide to love, loss and depression” is the main focus of the cover and is written in large letter, but again the writing is childish and quite scruffy making it look like a teenager had written it almost like a mind map with the toys surrounding it. The word ‘pop’ is written on each shelf, this gives another clue to the audience about what the album will sound like and the genre of it, this targets an audience that likes pop rock and is a good way to attract.

The use of black and white colour on this depicts the bands dark and emotional genre. By putting the bands logo up above the buildings implies to the audience that they are on top and that they are a big band. The person stood in the foreground between the parallel shows the loneliness of the person and gives the audience a feel of what the album will contain; it shows that the songs are about rising above loneliness etc. as the writing below reads “start something”. The cover is inspirational and gives the audience an idea of what the music in the album is about. The album name is simple and fits to the genre of the band.
